Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe, a landlocked country of Southern Africa, is best known for its dramatic geography and impressive wildlife. Among its considerable attractions are Victoria Falls, the largest sheet of falling water in the world, and Matobo National Park, formerly known as Rhodes Matopos National Park, which is home to a healthy population of black and white rhino. The area is also rich in granite outcrops which make for spectacular walks and views.
Just south of Victoria Falls is Hwange National Park, whose main claim to fame is large herds of elephant, resident lions and one of the world’s largest populations of the elusive wild dog, the world’s most efficient predator. Concealed lookouts and waterholes with viewing platforms maximise game viewing opportunities, while conservation has placed Hwange in the unique position of offering a glimpse into what Africa’s interior looked like prior to colonialism.
Another area worth a look-in is Masvingo, home to the Great Zimbabwe Ruins, or Great Zimbabwe National Monument, built between 1100 and 1450 AD.
