Responsible tourism policy
Avo Orange aims to preserve the communities and environments we visit by supporting activities and projects that adhere to the following criteria.
Community sustainability
The community programs we support are those that are owned and managed by the community, or in partnership with a custodian, in order to preserve:
- Human rights and dignity; and
- Cultural integrity
Community projects currently supported include for example the following:
Project | Area | Country | Type |
The Living Museum of the Damara | Twyfelfontein | Namibia | Community owned and operated |
Nakambale Museum | Olukonda | Namibia | Community owned and operated |
Mafwe Living Museum | Samsitu Lake | Namibia | Community owned and operated |
Mbunza Living Museum | Samsitu Lake | Namibia | Community owned and operated |

Khomani San settlement | Askham | South Africa | Community owned and operated |
!Khwa ttu Sand settlement | Yzerfontein | South Africa | Community owned and operated |
Umphakatsi Village | Hlane | Swaziland | Community owned and operated |
Environmental sustainability
Our foremost support is given to national parks, and our tours are planned accordingly.
Private reserves are supported to the extent that they meet the following criteria:
- The environment provided is as near as possible to natural habitat and territorial ranges; and
- Interaction with wildlife is strictly limited to that which is necessary
We are opposed to the keeping of big cats in captivity, for the stated purposes of ‘conservation’.
We DO NOT SUPPORT any project that allows big cat and human interaction.
Private projects currently supported include the following:
Project | Area | Country | Type |
Wildlife ACT | Parakurunga | Botswana | Conservation project – ecologist managed |
Wildlife ACT | Third Bridge | Botswana | Conservation project – ecologist managed |
Thali Thali | Langebaan | South Africa | Private game reserve – open vehicle viewing only |
In-house operation
In-house, we operate in a manner commensurate with the Fairtrade principles. Our hope is to support others who currently do the same, and to inspire fence-sitting operations to change.
