Hermanus is unquestionably the world’s foremost land-based whale watching destination. An added bonus is its stunning scenic beauty and extensive cliff-side walkways.
Having grown rapidly to accommodate tourism, the town still retains a sense of the quaint charm of the fishing village it once was. A walk along the Old Harbour gives a glimpse into the village’s past, while a stroll along the cliff path will almost certainly yield a Southern Right Whale sighting during the whale season. This runs from June to December, during which time the Hermanus whale crier - the only whale crier in the world - does his rounds daily at 10am and 4pm.
Dolphins are visible from the shore for most of the year, and boat trips can be taken for closer marine wildlife viewing.
