Okavango Delta

Okavango Delta - Botswana

Located in Botswana’s South West, the Okavango Delta is a massive inland delta fed by the Okavango River. Formed by a depression in the earth’s crust in the Kalahari basin, the Delta attracts about 11 cubic km of water each year, which spreads over the 6,000-15,000 square km of the basin. Other than flood water to Lake Ngami there is no outflow from the area, so the water mostly evaporates over time.

The Okavango Delta is incredibly popular – and little wonder. Its scale and majesty has earned it a place in the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa, and its rich abundance of game makes this one of the world’s foremost conservancies. The Big 5 is just the start; hippos, crocodiles, giraffe, zebra, several predator species and more can be found among the channels, lagoons, swamps and islands; along with the slightly less glamorous but very interesting Little 5 for those with a keen eye. A spectacular selection of birds – 593 species – makes this a serious birder’s paradise.

Among the Delta’s top attractions is the Moremi Game Reserve, a National Park on the Eastern side. Even the Delta’s outer edges are well worth a visit via an overnight mokoro trip with polers, locals born and bred who have a wealth of knowledge. Game walks are included, and if you can afford it, a flight over the Delta is an unmissable photographic opportunity.

The tours listed below offer the option of an Okavango Delta visit, the pricing depends on the level of luxury.
